The concept of process intensification
"Green process design" is a very important issue for the chemical industry. Because the chemical industry always has the stereotype of large construction areas, high pollution, high energy consumption, and high risk in the traditional perception. Therefore, the chemical industry has actively promoted the concept of process intensification to develop and design the processes toward the principles of "miniaturization" and "multi-functionality". The concept reduces the equipment volume and energy requirements of the process and decreases the impact on society and the environment.
The alleged "miniaturization" is to reduce the volume of the equipment by enhancing the mass transfer and heat transfer efficiency, such as high gravity and micro-channel equipment are in this category. The "multi-functionalization" is the integration of different process procedures through the design of equipment and systems, thereby reducing the number of equipment and energy consumption. Reactive distillation is one of the representative technologies.
Adopt multi-functionalization design principles
Our product manufacturing process has also adopted multifunctional design concepts in recent years. In the past, ultra-high-concentration wastewater was produced in the reaction process of producing the main product of the Fine Chemical Division, which caused the back-end wastewater system to be inferior to the treatment of the bottleneck for expansion. The ultra-high-concentration wastewater is actually a mixture of raw materials and reactions, which can be separated and reused as long as it is purified by distillation. However, under the condition of full capacity, if the reactor is used for distillation and purification, it will inevitably affect the capacity.
In order to solve this problem, our company adopts the principle of multifunctional design and integrates the two functions of reactor and distillation tower, which is called "reactive distillation". Simply put, the reaction and distillation purification are combined in a system and without occupying other equipment and man-hours.
This technology has four main advantages, listed as follows:
- Reduce the number of devices
- Reduce waste and improve raw material utilization
- Cut down the reaction time and increase the chemical reaction rate
- Make full use of reaction heat and reduce energy usage
Green chemistry can be expected
In response to the rising global awareness of environmental protection, the living space of traditional chemical processes has been greatly limited. The mainstream design of green chemical processes in the future all hope to develop in the direction of process enhancement.
