Why use CHAPS?
Characteristics of CHAPS
CHAPS (CAS 75621-03-3), with full chemical name as 3-[(3-Cholamidopropyl) dimethylammonio]-1-propanesulfonate, is a non-denaturing zwitterionic surfactant. It is a white powder solid at normal temperature, with good water solubility (50 mg/mL) but also hydrophobicity at molecular level.[1] When dissolving CHAPS in water, the appearance of its aqueous solution would be clear colorless to pale yellow.[2]
Applications of CHAPS
Some studies indicate that compared to NP-40 and Triton X-100, CHAPS can gently and effectively break the nuclear membrane, solubilize the membrane proteins and destruct the protein-protein interactions (PPIs). Besides, CHAPS is able to protect the native state or conformation of a protein, furthermore, to maintain the activity and function of the protein [2] [3] [4]. CHAPS is thus widely used in the field of biological sciences research such as cell lysis and protein purification. It is important to note, when you are preparing any solution with CHAPS, please try not to shake or stir fiercely [2].
HOPAX is expected to start offering DMF-free CHAPS
With rising awareness of chemical safety in the global markets, more and more users are looking for DMF (Dimethylformamide)-free CHAPS for their applications. As the leading CHAPS manufacturer, HOPAX has been investing its R & D resources in developing a solution to remove DMF from its CHAPS manufacturing process. So far the results are satisfactory. If all goes well, HOPAX is expecting to start offering DMF-free CHAPS in early 2021!
