Why use MOPS?
Characteristics of MOPS
MOPS (CAS No. 1132-61-2), with full chemical name as 3-(N-Morpholino)-Propanesulfonic Acid, is a zwitterionic biological buffer. It is a white powder solid at normal temperature, with high hydrophilicity and excellent water solubility (1000 g/L at 20℃). When dissolving MOPS in water, the appearance of its aqueous solution is colorless.
Applications and precautions of MOPS
With the useful pH range falling between pH 6.5 and pH 7.9, MOPS is often used in molecular biological and biochemical research. Not just as a pH buffering agent for protein purification and extraction, an ingredient of buffered culture media for bacteria, yeast and mammalian cells, MOPS is also the best choice as a running buffer for RNA isolation via agarose gel electrophoresis[1]. Due to lack of the ability to form chelates with most metal ions, MOPS is recommended as a non-coordinating buffer when preparing solutions containing metal ions. It is important to note that if you intend to sterilize MOPS before use, please do not autoclave it. According to the relevant research literatures, unknown yellowish substances will be produced as degradation products when sterilizing MOPS via autoclaving [1], therefore, filtration through a membrane with 0.2 micron or smaller pore size would be the recommended sterilization method for MOPS.

Why use CHAPS?
2020.02.24
Some studies indicate that compared to NP-40 and Triton X-100, CHAPS can gently and effectively break the nuclear membrane, solubilize the membrane proteins and destruct the protein-protein interactions (PPIs).

Why use HEPES?
2019.10.07
Compared with other buffers such as PBS (phosphate buffered saline) and TRIS, HEPES has higher stability in maintaining the pH values of the cell culture media, that’s also the reason why HEPES is widely used in cell culture
